Apocryphal Texts is an exhibition of new work by Brian Counihan. His panoramically proportioned paintings, woodcut prints, and sculptures are an attempt to process these seemingly apocalyptic times by using the kind of fractured “sampling” methods employed by modernist literature for over a century. These works also look back on a creative life lived outside the Arts Industry which, ironically, measures artistic success by the achievement of a career Retrospective Exhibition.
High school students were apprenticed in nearly every phase of the creation of these works until the COVID 19 pandemic suspended hands-on studio involvement. The scale and complexity of these works were conceived with the goal of elevating student confidence and ambition while giving those students an opportunity to work with a wide variety of art media and methods.
Brian Counihan is an Irish visual artist who received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in Cork City, and later earned both a BA in Literature and MA in Liberal Arts from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. For over a decade he worked as a studio artist in New York City and Chicago in areas ranging in diversity from museum frames conservation to fresco muralist.
Brian is currently an instructor at Community High School for the Arts and Academics where he has developed studio arts and humanities curricula since its foundation eighteen years ago.
