New artwork using an Encaustic art process, also known as hot wax painting, will soon grace the walls of the Alexander/Heath Contemporary Art Gallery at 109 Campbell Ave SW, Downtown Roanoke.

The exhibit features artwork of varied styles including conceptual art, abstract painting, mixed media and photography all created with the use of varied techniques and Encaustic medium.

This exhibit, curated by Gina Louthian-Stanley, underlines the many techniques and visions of these 18 unique artists using Encaustic medium to create beautiful and organic works.

Each artist represented has a distinct voice and vision when ‘painting’ with this ‘mysterious medium’.  Some are fairly new to encaustic, and some have worked in the medium for over 20+ years.

Unlike other painting media, encaustic begins in a molten phase and becomes solid. The artists only have a few seconds to move the brush from palette to panel before the wax becomes unworkable.

Heat is used to manipulate the paint and wax. Once solid, it has unusual light reflection qualities that can be seen throughout the layers of paint.
The works exhibited will explore the concept of Voice through their process or through their subject matter.
